STEM education is not only about knowledge, it is about doing.

SMAC-SIAC is unique in its approach to school and social reform.

A scientist can tell you about the behaviors of the natural and physical world. Engineers can solve the problems of the world and create worlds that never existed before, based on scientific principles.

If knowledge is the only foundation of STEM education, then it is not only challenging but fundamentally impossible for a standardized test to evaluate whether a student has been properly educated in STEM, or assess if a student can be successful in a STEM field.

Certainly, a standardized test is a measure but if it is the only measure, then as an example it is obvious why a student can perform poorly in class, or even drop out of school, and then ultimately become a prolific and exceptional coder.

To better prepare students in STEM for the real world, the educational paradigm cannot be one-dimensional.

To create a successful STEM community, we must include more than testing and the standardized, traditional modes of knowledge assessment. We require an exploration of alternatives to standardized testing.

There is a well-established culture of test preparation and test taking. However, we believe that both teachers and students will benefit from bigger, broader and more modern teaching methods, like project-based learning or portfolio-based assessment.

SMAC-SIAC’s approach to education includes opportunities for all of our students to engage as active participants in their own communities.

Our Mini and Junior Ambassadors Club enables students of all ages to take part in learning to serve and help others within the community. The program allows the students opportunities to advocate and volunteer for various organizations and sectors within the community.

Students will meet community leaders, make new friends and learn new skills. This program focuses on generosity, meaningful work and building character. Students will engage in constructive participation in the community while learning that their humanitarian efforts can make a difference in the world around them.

Our Mini and Junior Ambassadors Club is included in our curriculum for our students and is available to students in the wider community through after-school programming.
